Why Tyrewise

Tyrewise is the mechanism by which importers and sellers take responsibility for the environmental impact of their product. This is known as product stewardship.

Designed by industry and supported by government, Tyrewise allows us all to work together to end the inconsistent disposal practices which lead to stockpiling, illegal dumping and tyre fires. The scheme will also create certainty around tyre supply and build sustainable income streams for those creating new products from tyres.

Together we are kaitiaki, working to end tyre waste in every community in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It couldn’t be simpler

Whether it’s going on holiday or taking the kids to school, Kiwis don’t just rely on tyres, we rely on them being disposed of safely and responsibly.

When purchasing from Advantage, the tyre stewardship fee is included in your new tyre’s total price. Leave your end-of-life tyres with Advantage, and Tyrewise will take care of the rest. Your old tyres will get a second life, instead of being wasted. It couldn’t be easier. Together we can create innovative solutions for old tyres. Tyrewise will be funding research and innovation projects that support kiwi solutions for end-of-life tyres, helping to keep products and materials in use for longer.

Tyrewise Recycled Rubber

Enough is enough

We need to move forward to a future without tyre waste. Currently, many end-of-life tyres are wasted – approximately 4 million of the 6.5 million tyres used annually end up in landfill, are stockpiled, or dumped, where they pose a threat to our environment through fire or toxic leachate.

Currently only 40% of end-of-life tyres are recycled or repurposed, but Tyrewise has ambitious goals to reach 90%. This will be funded by replacing the ad hoc disposal charge with a tyre stewardship fee that is included in your tyre costs when buying new tyres at Advantage.
