Michelin XTA

Buy the trailer tyre for long-haul efficiency, delivering low rolling resistance, outstanding mileage, even wear and a robust, retreadable casing for dependable stability.

Low rolling resistance compound. The Michelin XTA uses a next-generation, silica-rich tread compound with functionalised polymers and high-dispersion fillers to lower hysteresis across the operating temperature range, cutting rolling energy losses at the tyre–road interface. An optimised tread gauge over a cool-running undertread, combined with a stiff belt package and low-deformation crown geometry, minimises internal heat build-up at highway speeds under sustained trailer loads. The result is measurably reduced fuel consumption and CO2 per kilometre while maintaining casing integrity for long service life—ideal for fleets targeting lower total cost of ownership on New Zealand’s long-haul and regional routes.

Trailer-optimised rib pattern. A wide, multi-rib footprint with circumferential grooves and a decoupling shoulder on the Michelin XTA is engineered to resist the high lateral scrub forces typical of multi-axle trailers on tight yard turns and roundabouts. Pressure distribution is equalised through variable-pitch ribs and tie-barred shoulders to control irregular wear, while rounded shoulder radii mitigate tearing on coarse chipseal. This geometry maintains a stable contact patch and smooth wear progression, extending tread life and helping keep trailers tracking true, which translates directly into fewer change-outs and more predictable maintenance planning.

High-load robust casing. The Michelin XTA features a high-tensile steel belt package with optimised cord angles and a zero-degree reinforcement layer to stabilise the crown under heavy payloads, backed by a low-permeation inner liner to maintain inflation pressure. Triangular bead bundles with reinforced chafers improve clamping force and rim fit, reducing micro-slippage and heat at the bead seat during prolonged motorway running. This robust casing architecture dissipates heat efficiently and resists fatigue cracking, enabling repeated retreads and safeguarding uptime when operating at demanding axle loads common to modern NZ freight combinations.

Enhanced wet traction. Four wide circumferential grooves, high drainage void ratios, and micro-textured rib edges give the Michelin XTA strong water evacuation and film-breaking capability, enhancing braking efficiency and lateral stability on wet pavements. The silica-loaded compound elevates tan d in the 0–20°C range to maintain grip in cool, rainy conditions, while tread groove geometry is tuned to resist hydroplaning at typical New Zealand highway speeds. This delivers confident wet-road tracking for trailers, helping reduce sway and stopping distances and supporting compliance with fleet safety targets in variable weather.

Retread-ready casing technology. Engineered from the outset for Michelin Remix retreading, the Michelin XTA casing uses adhesion-optimised skim stocks and corrosion-resistant belt cords to preserve bond strength through multiple heat cycles. Consistent crown contour and robust sidewall construction facilitate accurate shearography inspection and reliable retread application, while the cool-running inner liner helps slow oxidation of internal components over time. Fleets gain maximum value from each casing through multiple retread lives without compromising structural integrity, materially lowering cost per kilometre and reducing waste across the tyre lifecycle.
